Computer Donation to Celaya, Mexico
Computer Donation to Celaya, Mexico

Each year the Rotary Club of Celaya, Mexico selects a student to receive an award for excellence in his or her studies. As a tribute to the selected student, the Rotary Club of Celaya makes a donation to the elementary school that the student attended. In 2004, the student selected to receive the award attended Emiliano Zapata Elementary School in the pueblo of Teneria del Santuario in Celaya, Mexico.
In honor of that student, the Rotary Club of Celaya decided to initiate a project to purchase and install computers in the Emiliano Zapata Elementary School, since the school of approximately 300 students had no computers or related technology. The Club proceeded to erect a wall around the school to prevent vandals from accessing school property. In addition, they built several benches on the school grounds so that the school children had a place to sit to eat their lunch. Finally, they solicited contributions from other Rotary Clubs to purchase the computers for the school.
The Rotary Club of Glastonbury came to the rescue by agreeing to donate enough money to purchase three Dell computers with monitors and three printers. In turn, the Rotary Club of Celeya donated the materials necessary to construct a 20' by 20' addition to the school for the purpose of housing the computers. Many parents of the students supplied the labor necessary to actually build the addition.
In September of 2004, the school celebrated the grand opening of the new computer room. Now, every week each student has the opportunity to attend training sessions on the new computers. In April of 2005, the Glastonbury Rotary Club purchased a fourth computer and its Past President, Joe Jaconetta, traveled to the school to deliver it to the school children.
